It will be the last conventional A4.
One of the best-kept mysteries in the automobile business is the next-generation Audi A4. Although we’ve only seen two prototypes testing on public roads (see related links below), our friends at Motor.es were able to build an accurate virtual preview of the upcoming small executive model. The rendering at the top of this post is the product of their efforts, and everything we know about the new A4 so far is listed below.

The next A4 was rumoured to be switching to the MQB platform, which would have saved the company $1 billion in development expenses. The proposal was shelved, and the A4 will adhere to the MLB, which means the engines will be mounted longitudinally. More notably, the new generation will be the last to use combustion engines in the series.
While many manufacturers are abandoning the diesel engine, the new A4 will offer a variety of gasoline and diesel engines, with some form of electrification very definitely included. The new generation will be the last to have an exhaust pipe, while a totally electric version is expected for the new model as well. In a report from October of last year, Audi’s head of technical development said that if the A4 EV is approved for production, it will be based on the PPE platform.

We have no reason to expect the new A4’s design will be a significant change from the current model. On the contrary – as this new rendering previews – we expect the exterior appearance of the A4 to be more of a heavy facelift of the current generation rather than a brand new design language.
It’s tough to say when the Audi A4 will be released in 2023, but we do know it will be available until the end of the decade. Our best bet is a late 2022 launch, with sales and production likely starting in the first part of the year, depending on the chip shortage and a few other circumstances.
