2023 Mercedes GLC Six-Cylinder Model Planned, But Not The Exciting Kind

The GLC 400d will have a bigger engine than the four-cylinder GLC 63.

“The times they are a-changin’,” as Bob Dylan put it. The forthcoming AMG C63 will lose half of its cylinders to transition from a V8 to a hybrid four-pot with an electric turbo, according to multiple reports. All C-Class (W206) variants, including the yet-to-be-released C43, have been downsized to four-cylinder engines.

I’m sure you already knew that. While everyone expects the 2023 GLC to follow suit because it’s the crossover counterpart of the C-Class, that won’t be the case fully. Yes, it will use the same engines as the sedan and waggon, but it will have a unique feature. The three-pointed star has informed Autocar that a new GLC 400d would be released. It will be the sole model of the midsize luxury SUV with a six-cylinder engine.

The six-pot will be mild-hybrid, just like the smaller engines, to reduce fuel consumption and pollutants. Mercedes designed the powertrain with a 48-volt integrated starter generator that produces 22 horsepower and 147 pound-feet (200 Newton-meters) for a brief period of time. The GLC 400d will be able to coast with the motor shut off to save even more fuel.

You have to admit that selling a six-cylinder GLC when the AMG models will have two fewer cylinders seems a little odd. Of course, cylinder count isn’t everything, especially as the 400d and performance versions appeal to various types of clients. There will also be 300e and 400e plug-in hybrids, as well as a 300de that combines a diesel with an electric powertrain, according to Autocar. The PHEV versions are expected to have an electric range of more than 62 miles (100 kilometres).

The diesels are unlikely to make it to the United States, where oil-burners have never been as popular as they are in Europe, and are even less so following VW’s Dieselgate scandal. The new GLC will offer available air suspension and rear-wheel steering, just like the newest C-Class, as we found from our own review. To no one’s surprise, the crossover will have all of the technology found in the saloon.

The 2023 GLC will be 0.6 inches (1.5 cm) longer between the wheels than the model it will replace, allowing for more rear passenger legroom. We also know that cargo capacity will increase by 600 litres from 19.4 cubic feet to 21.1 cubic feet. Of course, the not-a-coupeĀ GLC CoupeĀ is going to lose some of the practicality for the sake of extra style, although that’s debatable.
