Expect a lot of power to carry a lot of weight…
We’re still trying to wrap our heads around the concept of a hybrid BMW M5, but the sports sedan will undoubtedly make its way down the electric road. The “Hybrid Test Vehicle” stickers on the front doors and rear bumper, as well as the charging port cap on the front-left fender, are all dead giveaways. In a fresh spy film captured when the test driver was enjoying some pleasant country roads, the AMG E63 challenger reappears.
The prototype’s M character is evident in the hefty wheel arches and quad exhausts, not to mention the enormous brakes on the back axle. While the test vehicle appeared to have the whole production body, the final headlights and taillights were lacking. A little trunk lid spoiler is hidden beneath the camo, and a normal-sized grille is hidden in the front.
The next-generation BMW 5 Series, like many previous BMWs, will have flush door handles to produce a smoother side profile for greater ventilation. Winter tyres are the explanation for the smaller wheels than we’re used to seeing on an M5. Expect a wider set flanking what appear to be beefier side skirts in the production version.

Because it’s a plug-in hybrid, the new M5 should be able to fit a fairly large battery pack for a reasonable amount of electric range. It should use the same PHEV system as the Concept XM, which claimed to be able to travel 80 kilometres (50 miles) on a single charge. The two are widely rumored to use a new S68 engine that could go down in history as the very last BMW V8.
The plug-in hybrid SUV will go into production by the end of the year and is expected to have roughly 750 horsepower, similar to the concept from last year. The M5’s combined output should be comparable, which is great in and of itself, but the electric motor and battery pack will undoubtedly add weight. Because the M5 Competition now weighs 1,930 kg (or 4,409 pounds), don’t be surprised if it exceeds 2,000 kg (or 4,409 pounds) (4,255 lbs).
The next M5 will have to wait a long time because BMW will debut the upcoming 5 Series first. As a result, the range-topper is unlikely to see the market before the end of 2023 or the beginning of 2024.
