2024 Chevrolet Silverado HD Refresh Spied Towing Current-Gen Trucks

Updated styling could hide a Duramax diesel with 1,000 pound-feet of torque underneath.

The current-generation Chevrolet Silverado HD has a divisive visage, according to critics. It’s certainly audacious, and it appears that much of that audacity will be preserved in the facelifted truck due in 2024. Two Silverado HD prototypes are hitched to trailers transporting, well, themselves, as seen for the first time at Motor1.com.

It’s an excellent approach to do prototype car towing tests. A double-cab dually Silverado HD 3500 can weigh well over 7,000 pounds, depending on the specifications. The one-ton GMC Sierra HD, which we also see on a trailer in these spy images, is the same. We don’t know what’s going on here, but if you’re strength-testing a prototype and aren’t sure it’ll hold up, hauling a truck capable of towing it home is a brilliant idea.

In any case, we get a sneak peek into the Silverado HD’s future. Although detailed alterations are hidden by heavy coverings, it looks like the headlights will be updated. It’s likely that we’re looking at placeholders on these prototypes, albeit the current configuration of little lights at the top and a larger cluster beneath them could change. The grille appears to be broader than before, although the horizontal bar that bisects the headlights appears to stay inside the grille’s boundaries. Though there are substantial coverings in the back, adjustments should be minimal and limited to the taillight design.

The news that the Duramax diesel would get a power boost will pique the interest of GM truck lovers. The 6.6-liter engine is currently lagging behind Ford and Ram’s crosstown rivals, but with 445 horsepower and 910 pound-feet of torque, it can still tow a small moon. Those statistics could grow to 500 hp and 1,000 lb-ft in the upgraded model, giving Chevrolet fans some on-paper bragging rights once more.

When can we expect a premiere date? Our intelligence sources haven’t given us any firm dates, but we believe the redesigned Silverado HD will be a 2024 model year vehicle. This points to a release later this year or early in 2023.

In any event, we’re given a glimpse of the Silverado HD’s future. Heavy coverings hide detailed changes but it appears the headlights will at least get a makeover. It’s possible we could be looking at placeholders on these prototypes, though the current layout of small lights at the top with a larger cluster underneath could be changing. The grille looks larger than ever, but the horizontal bar bisecting the headlights appears to stay within the confines of the grille. As for the rear, though we see heavy coverings, changes should be minimal and relegated primarily to the taillight design.
