Microsoft is said to have laid off employees at Turn 10 Studios, the company that makes the video game series Forza Motorsport. Although the exact number of layoffs at the studio is unknown, reports suggest that almost half of the employees have been let go.
It’s unclear how the roughly 70 people who were fired will impact upcoming Forza Motorsport games, according to The Verge. In 2023, the studio released Forza Motorsport, the most recent game in the franchise, for the Xbox Series X/S and PC. It received mixed reviews, with some criticizing the game’s more recent features, such as the RPG-style progression system, which the studio made an effort to fix.
However, gamers have generally enjoyed the Motorsport franchise. Early examples of the game earned Metacritic scores in the low 90s; however, the scores began to falter with the release of Forza Motorsport 5.
In 2023, Forza Motorsport was the eighth game in the series. In 2005, the franchise debuted as Xbox’s answer to Gran Turismo on the PlayStation. With the release of Forza Horizon, an arcade-style open-world alternative that prioritized the motoring lifestyle over flawless lap times at famous tracks, Microsoft would grow the Forza series.
The Turn 10 layoffs were a component of a broader purge that affected all of Microsoft’s businesses. The tech giant has not reportedly laid off any employees at Playground Games, the English studio that created the Horizon franchise, which is also available on the PlayStation.
