BMW Z4 Production Stopping For Two Weeks Due To Lack Of Parts

Production of the 5 Series is also affected.

The manufacture of the Z4 and 5 Series by BMW will be put on hold at the Magna Steyr facility in Austria.

The manufacturing will be halted on Monday, March 14, 2022, and will be in effect for two weeks, according to a report by ORF, Austria’s national public service broadcaster. The main reason for the production halt is a shortage of parts, mainly wiring harnesses obtained from Ukraine, as a result of the current Russia-Ukraine conflict. It’s still uncertain whether manufacturing will resume after two weeks, as it depends on whether the supply-chain issues are fixed by then.

Employees who are affected would be compelled to use their vacation days, according to a Magna representative. Others will work from home and have shorter workdays, while others will be forced to work overtime.

It’s also uncertain whether the Toyota Supra’s production would be hindered by the component shortage.

The crisis between Russia and Ukraine continues to wreak havoc on different industries, including the auto industry. Several automakers have already announced their temporary departure from the impacted areas, while others have pledged their support for Ukraine’s humanitarian efforts.

Last month, a report claimed that the BMW Z4 might be phased out in 2025. According to reports, the automaker is dissatisfied with the revenue generated by the roadster. The production halt will almost certainly have a negative impact on Z4 sales, which are already low. By the end of 2021, BMW had only sold over 2,400 copies of the Z4.

At this point, it’s unclear whether this will have an impact on the Supra’s future.

BMW stated it “cannot speculate on future product offerings” and declined to comment on the report.
