The September 2024 individual sales figures of Indian automakers showed yet another dismal month’s worth of performance. Significant brands like Hyundai and Tata kept reporting declining sales, but Maruti Suzuki reported a rise in sales thanks to robust exports and expanding sales to other OEMs. Mahindra and Toyota, meanwhile, continued on their current growth track. This is an overview of the brands’ performance.
Hyundai India
In September 2024, Hyundai recorded cumulative sales of 64,201 units, a decrease of 10.38% from the same month the previous year. Domestic sales decreased from 54,241 units in the previous year to 51,101 units this month. In September 2024, exports totaled 13,100 units, a decrease of about 25% from the same month the previous year.
However, domestic sales increased month over month to 51,101 units in August 2024 from 49,525 units. Exports however were down from 13,650 units to 13,100 units. According to Hyundai, the brand’s SUV lineup accounted for 70% of all sales throughout the month, with CNG making up the remaining 13.8% of total sales.
Kia India
September 2025 saw 23,523 vehicles sold overall for Kia India, a 17% increase over the 20,022 units sold in the same month the previous year. The Sonet remained the brand’s best-selling model with over 10,000 units sold in the month. With 6,959 units sold, the Seltos came in second, followed closely by the Carens with 6,217 units sold. There were 2,006 units exported.
Additionally, the company disclosed that during the third quarter of the year, it sold 66,553 units, a 10% increase from the second quarter. According to Kia, the Sonet accounted for 45% of its sales during the quarter, with the Seltos and Carens contributing 28% and 27%, respectively.
Maruti Suzuki
The biggest automaker in India revealed yet another month of declining sales, with 1,48,061 cars sold domestically overall, down from 1,53,106 units. This number included the Super Cary, the brand’s only LCV, which sold 3,099 units in September 2024, up from 2,294 units the previous year. Within the specific categories, sales of the Alto and S-presso increased somewhat from 10,351 units in December 2024 to 10,363 units in the same month last year, while sales of Utility Vehicles increased from 59,272 units to 61,549 units this past month. Van sales increased as well, from 11,147 to 11,908 units.
Compact car sales, which include the majority of the brand’s hatchbacks and the Dzire, decreased by nearly 8,000 units year over year, while Ciaz sales decreased to just 662 from 1,491 units in the previous year.
Maruti reported total sales of 1,84,727 units, up from 1,81,343 units the previous year, thanks to strong exports of 27,728 units, up from 22,511 units, and expanding sales to other OEMs.
MG Motor India
In September 2024, MG Motor India saw a year-over-year decrease in sales, with 4,588 units sold. Sales decreased by around 8.3% in comparison to the 5003 units sold in the same month the previous year. Nonetheless, compared to August 2024, when it reported sales of 4,571 units, the company did observe a slight increase.
Additionally, the company stated that sales of its range of electric vehicles accounted for 49% of its total sales.
Mahindra & Mahindra
In September 2024, Mahindra & Mahindra announced a 24% year-over-year increase in sales. Domestic sales at the same period in 2023 were 41,267 units, however they were 51,062 units this month. September sales were better than August 2024 revenues as well. Sales increased by nearly 18% month over month from 43,277 units sold in the prior month. 52,590 passenger vehicles were sold overall, with 1,528 units exported in the passenger car market.
Mahindra is preparing to begin accepting reservations for the next Thar Roxx on October 3, and the company anticipates launching its first electric vehicle (EV) under the Born Electric brand before the year is over.
Tata Motors
In September 2024, Tata Motors had cumulative sales of 41,313 passenger vehicles, a 9% decrease from the previous year. In the same month the previous year, the automaker claimed 45,317 vehicles sold domestically. Total PV sales in the home market were 41,063 units, down 8% from the previous year, while exports dropped to 250 units from 508 units in the same month the previous year. Sales of passenger cars decreased as well from August 2024, when 44,486 units were reported by the business.
With 4,680 EVs sold in the year, EV sales were also declining, falling 23.14% from August 2024 and 23% from the previous year.
Tata reported a 15% decrease in domestic sales overall, from 82,023 units in September 2023 to 69,694 units last month.
Toyota Kirloskar Motor
In September 2024, Toyota had a 14% increase in sales year over year, with 26,847 units sold (including exports). 3,045 units were exported, while 23,802 units were sold domestically. The brand’s highest-ever number during the period and a significant increase over the 1,23,939 units recorded in the same period previous year, the firm revealed that its overall sales in the first half of the financial year were 1,62,623 units.
However, sales were lower than in August 2024, when 30,879 units were sold cumulatively, according to the business.
