Corvette Z06 Engine Honors Astronauts With 54 Rocket Ship Easter Eggs

The team developed the engine under the codename Gemini, like the NASA missions.

Jordan Lee, the automaker’s Global Chief Engineer, revealed that the LT6 engine in the 2023 Chevrolet Corvette Z06 was developed under the codename Gemini during a recent deep-dive presentation. This is a reference to NASA’s Project Gemini missions from the 1960s. The staff honours this by hiding 54 rocket ship Easter eggs throughout the mill.

In the photograph above, one of them may be seen. It’s just to the left of the red valve cover on the right side of the block. Some of them, according to Lee, have a functional role as a directional sign when putting the engine together. One diagram, for example, depicts which way the pistons should be pointed.

The team’s excitement for the astronaut period in the 1960s and 1970s led to the Gemini codename. It has a Corvette connection as well. During this time, Chevy offered astronauts the opportunity to lease any of its products for $1 per year. Many of them opted for ‘Vettes, and the sports cars and these men became synonymous in the popular mind.

According to Lee, the codename Gemini comes from the Latin word gemini, which means “twin.” There are two intake plenums and two throttle bodies, for example.

The LT6 has a lot of interesting features. It has a split intake manifold with internal runners, for example, which boosts low-rpm torque.  Three valves inside open or close when the engine reaches certain rpms to optimize the airflow going through it.

The LT6 has dual-overhead camshafts and a displacement of 5.5 litres. At 8,400 rpm, it produces 670 horsepower (500 kilowatts). At 8,600 rpm, the engine reaches its redline. At 6,300 rpm, the torque peaks at 460 pound-feet (624 Newton-meters).

There’s no word on how much the Z06 will cost or when it will be available. There are rumours that the starting price will be less than $90,000. According to a January 2022 rumour, dealers will be able to begin collecting orders for the meaner Corvette on March 24. Production would then begin on May 9th. The arrival of vehicles in showrooms usually takes several weeks from the commencement of assembly.
