DeLorean Alpha5 Debuts As Electric Coupe With 300 Miles Of Range

Italdesign gave it the largest gullwing doors we’ve ever seen.

DeLorean is back, and with its all-new Alpha5, it’s ready to embrace the future by jumping on the electric bandwagon. It takes the form of a sleek coupe with gullwing doors fashioned by Italdesign, just like its source of inspiration, the classic DMC-12. The only allusions to the past are the top-hinged huge doors and back glass louvres, as the remainder of the design is completely modern.

It has large wheels and small front and rear lights, just like today’s EVs. The charging port is located on the driver’s side front fender, eliminating the need to open the trunk to access the gas cap. The Alpha5 has a two-tone finish and a swoopy roofline reminiscent of the car made famous by the Back to the Future trilogy.

The flux capacitor has been removed from the inside to make place for two separate back seats. It, like the latest high-end EVs, does away with most (if not all) traditional controls in favour of a touchscreen that sits atop a “floating” central console. The driver has a flat-bottomed steering wheel and a big completely digital instrument cluster. Given how wide the gullwing doors are and the lack of a B-pillar, getting to the back seats should be a snap.

DeLorean is keeping quiet about the engine, but it says state the Alpha5 takes 3.4 seconds to reach 60 mph (96 km/h) and has an electronically limited top speed of 150 mph (241 km/h). It boasts a battery pack with a capacity of more than 100 kWh, giving it a range of more than 300 miles, according to the EPA (483 kilometers). All of these specifications relate to the “basic performance model,” implying that more powerful versions are on the way.

We also know that the electric coupe has a low drag coefficient of 0.23, which isn’t the greatest in the sector, since Mercedes’ EQS liftback has a Cd of 0.20. Thankfully, Peugeot-Renault-weak Volvo’s V6 gasoline engine has been replaced with an unidentified electric arrangement that will run from 0 to 88 mph (142 km/h) in 4.35 seconds, after which it will most likely not time travel.

When the gullwing doors are closed, it measures 4,995 millimetres (196.6 inches) long, 2,044 millimetres (80.4 inches) broad, and 1,370 millimetres (53.9 inches) height. DeLorean claims to have outsourced production to Italy, with the powertrain coming from a UK supplier.

Only 88 cars will be produced (of course! ), with a V8-powered sports coupe to follow. If all goes as planned, the extended portfolio will include an electric sedan and possibly a hydrogen-powered SUV. The DeLorean Alpha5 will go into production in 2024, following its public premiere in August at Pebble Beach.
