GM CEO Announces Future Plans

By the middle of the decade, GM plans to launch a personal driverless vehicle based on technology developed by its subsidiary Cruise. At the CES 2022 press presentation, GM made the news. Mary Barra, the company’s CEO, has been tight-lipped about the car’s design or type. Although GM’s Cruise is testing a self-driving robotaxi service in California, it is designated as public transportation. Crusie is also collaborating with GM on the launch of the Origin, a purpose-built autonomous car for ride-sharing that is currently in the testing phase.

In several of its vehicles, GM makes use of Cruise-developed ADAS technology. It’s called Super Cruise, and it’s ADAS level 2, but it’s also called Ultra Cruise, which is ADAS level 2 Plus. Tesla’s Autopilot is rated as level 2 ADAS, although the company promotes it as a complete self-driving capabilities. Of course, GM isn’t doing that, and expects a commercially available autonomous vehicle for personal use to arrive in 2025. GM announced deals with Qualcomm for its Snapdragon Digital Chassis platform for its Cruise subsidiary and its own electric cars at CES 2022 earlier this week. It also debuted an electrified version of its popular Silverado pickup truck. Cruise believes it could actually obtain degree 4 self driving quicker than others.
