Gujarat Transport Minister Announced
The Gujarat government said on Monday that a registration number can be kept by a car owner even after it is sold or wrecked, and that it can be transferred for a price to a new vehicle he or she purchases. Purnesh Modi, the Gujarat Transport Minister, claimed that such a system is already in existence in Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, and West Bengal, and that it was implemented here after car owners’ requests. He stated “People are attached to their vehicle registration numbers for several reasons, like religious beliefs or numerology. Now, owners in Gujarat can keep the number even after selling the vehicle or getting it scrapped.”
“The retained number can be transferred to a new vehicle purchased by the owner. However, it cannot be used for an old or already registered vehicle. Further, the owner as well as make of both vehicles must be the same. Thus, the retained number of cars cannot be transferred to a newly purchased bike by the same person,” he added. He clarified that numbers from vehicles that have already been scrapped cannot be retained at this time, and that the applicant must possess the vehicle for at least one year to be eligible for number retention. In 15 days, the process of keeping the old number and transferring it to a new vehicle must be completed.
