Hyundai Palisade and Kia Telluride vehicles made between 2020 and 2022 are a part of this concern.

The US Department of Transportation has advised owners of some Hyundai and Kia SUVs that were recently recalled due to fire hazards to park them outside and away from their homes until they are repaired. South Korean automakers recalled thousands of Hyundai Palisade and Kia Telluride vehicles manufactured between 2020 and 2022 last week, citing a risk of fire while the vehicles were parked or driven.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s website, this could be caused by a trailer hitch problem. So far, no fire-related incidents have been reported, nor have there been reports of crashes or injuries. However, a solution to the problem has yet to be identified.

Kia, on the other hand, reported six fire incidents in model year 2020 Telluride vehicles on Tuesday, five of which involved “localised melting only.” While there were no fires in the 2021 or 2022 models, they were included in the recall as a precautionary measure. The automaker will reimburse owners who have incurred repair costs.

A Hyundai spokesperson confirmed three Palisade fire incidents in Canada but none in the United States in another statement. The automaker is aware of eight such “melting” incidents in the United States and eight in Canada, according to the spokesman, but there have been no reports of crashes or injuries.

Once a repair for the issue is found, affected vehicle owners will be notified by the respective automakers to bring their SUVs to a Hyundai or Kia dealer. The recalls involve 245,030 Hyundai Palisade and 36,417 Kia Telluride vehicles, as per the consumer alert.
