Sales of cars were inferior in August 2024. Auto sales were under cloud cover last month due to heavy, unseasonal rains and severe flooding in many areas. Not only did many manufacturers report decreased year-over-year sales, but the biggest automaker in the nation saw an 8% decline in sales.

August 2024 had an 8% YoY decline in Maruti Suzuki sales to 1,43,075 units. In August 2023, more than 1,566,114 units were sold. However, compared to 1,37,463 units sold in July 2024, MoM sales improved by 4%. Last month, Maruti Brezza topped the sales statistics. Not only was it the best-selling model in the company’s range, but it also ranked first among the top ten cars and SUVs sold in August 2024.
Brezza sales were up 31% from 14,676 units sold in July 2024 to 19,190 units this month, a 32% increase over the 14,572 units sold in August 2023. At No. 2, the Ertiga came after it. Ertiga also reported better YoY and MoM growth, with YoY sales of 18,580 units and MoM sales of 18%. In August 2023, over 12,315 units were sold, and in July 2024, over 15,701 units.
With 16,450 units sold last month, WagonR sales also witnessed growth. While MoM sales increased by 2% from 16,191 units sold in July 2024, YoY sales improved by 6% from 15,578 units sold in August 2023. Maruti Swift sales decreased 31% in August 2024 from 18,653 vehicles sold in August 2023 to 12,844 units. MoM sales performance experienced a 24% decline as well. As of July 2024, 16,854 Swift units had been sold. This week, Maruti is set to introduce Swift CNG.
The Maruti Baleno hatchback’s YoY sales decreased by 33% from 18,516 units sold in August 2023 to 12,485 units in August 2024, despite a 34% MoM gain in demand. With 12,387 units sold in August 2024—a 2% YoY and 13% MoM increase in sales—the Fronx came in second. Conversely, Eeco van sales decreased 7% YoY and 8% MoM to 10,985 units, while DZire sales came in lower with 10,627 units.
The Grand Vitara had sales of 9,021 units last month, placing it in the sub-10,000 unit category. Celerio reported a 4% and 24% YoY drop, respectively. The XL6 (2,740 units), Alto (8,546 units), and Celerio (3,181 units) came next.
The Ignis (2,464 units), S Presso (2,102 units), Ciaz (707 units), Jimny (592 units), and Invicto (1764 units) were also featured in the sales list. Out of these models, the S Presso, Ciaz, and Invicto saw a YoY loss, while the Ignis saw positive YoY and MoM sales.
