Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara Receives 53,000 Bookings

The Grand Vitara, which will be released by Maruti Suzuki by the end of September, is currently undergoing media drives. Since the beginning of the month, the Grand Vitara has been available for reservations at NEXA dealerships all over India. Today, Maruti Suzuki announced that it has received 53,000 reservations for the brand-new compact SUV. 23,000 of these reservations are for the Strong Hybrid models. Therefore, 2 out of every 5 buyers choose the Grand Vitara’s Strong Hybrid models. At its Bidadi factory, close to Bengaluru, Toyota will produce the Grand Vitara alongside its version of the same SUV, the Hyryder Urban Cross, and distribute the Grand Vitara to Maruti Suzuki dealers.

Two engine choices will be available for the Maruti Grand Vitara, which is a badge-engineered variation of the Toyota Hyryder: a mild hybrid and a strong hybrid. A 1.5 litre, 4-cylinder, naturally aspirated gasoline engine with 100 horsepower and 135 pound-feet of torque will be paired with a mild hybrid system from Suzuki Hybrid Vehicle System (SHVS). Both a six-speed torque converter automatic and a five-speed manual gearbox will be available for the mild hybrid powertrain. Additionally, a mild hybrid powertrain with a manual transmission and all-wheel drive will be available. The Grand Vitara and its sibling, the Toyota Hyryder, will be two of the most capable SUVs in their class once all-wheel drive is an option.

With prices starting at Rs. 15.09 lakh, Toyota launched the Urban Cruiser Hyryder last week, adopting a premium pricing strategy. However, Maruti Suzuki’s plans for the Grand Vitara’s pricing are still unknown. A premium pricing strategy for the Grand Vitara will leave a sizable gap in Maruti Suzuki’s product lineup given that the S-Cross began at less than Rs. 10 lakh. The Toyota Hyryder’s sales will be impacted by the Grand Vitara’s pricing, which will not likely be in Toyota’s best interests. Therefore, Maruti Suzuki will face a precarious situation when setting the Grand Vitara’s price. It will be interesting to see what steps the biggest automaker in India takes in this direction.
