Mercedes-AMG SL PHEV Spied With Zero Camouflage

It probably has an electrified V8 under the hood.

Only the “55” and “63” versions of the new SL were available when Mercedes-Benz debuted it last year. Both have a V8 engine, but there are more varieties in the works, including a four-cylinder vehicle with an electric turbocharger and a plug-in hybrid type (see the related links below). Our cameras recently spotted the latter in Sweden, where it was being tested with no camouflage at all.

There don’t appear to be any substantial cosmetic distinctions between the V8 variants and the PHEV. The charging port on the back bumper is the big giveaway here, but aside from that, this prototype appears to be nearly identical to the models that are already on the market. This isn’t the most beautiful wheel design, but keep in mind that the test vehicle was equipped with winter tyres.

What’s going on behind the hood is the most pressing topic here. The short version is that there will be an electrified engine, which we’ve heard will be based on the current 4.0-liter V8. The SL63’s twin-turbo V8 will almost certainly get electric assistance, bringing the output close to 800 horsepower (597 kilowatts). The SL63, for example, boasts 577 horsepower (430 kW), implying that the plug-in hybrid might be substantially more powerful.

Every variant of the new SL was or will be designed under AMG’s supervision, which means they will all include the Panamericana grille with vertical slats. Just like the standard V8-powered models, the PHEV will also feature a quad exhaust arrangement at the back, as you can see from the attached spy photos in the gallery above.

The Mercedes-AMG SL E Performance is likely to be the top-of-the-line model in the lineup. A new “43” version of the SL, on the other hand, will use a 2.0-liter turbocharged engine shared with the new Mercedes C-Class. The four-cylinder engine in the roadster, on the other hand, will be equipped with an electronic turbocharger that is estimated to raise power output to as much as 385 horsepower (283 kW).
