It’s fun to watch high-powered performance cars and supercars click off blistering quick quarter-mile times, but those are out of the price range for many people. More popular models are chosen to be tested in a new video from the Sam CarLegion YouTube channel, and the channel has quite the trio for the competition. To determine which of the three affordable cars is the fastest, the 2022 Mazda MX-5, Subaru BRZ, and Jetta GLI are put to the test.

A 2.0-liter inline-four engine with naturally aspirated combustion produces 181 horsepower (134 kilowatts) and 151 pound-feet (204 Newton-meters) of torque in the Mazda. The six-speed manual transmission sends power from the engine to the rear wheels. The roadster is only about 2,400 pounds heavy (1,088 kilograms).

The Mazda has a number of advantages, but its launches give it a commanding lead in both races. It’s a lead it can’t hold, though. The Subaru finishes third, and the turbocharged Jetta passes the Mazda to win the race. The Mazda and Jetta cross the finish line simultaneously in the second race, which is much closer. Subaru came in last place.

The Mazda’s advantage in the rolling races is eliminated, and as a result, it trails the Subaru and the Volkswagen in the opening sprint. In the second rolling race, things turn out a little differently, with the Mazda finishing ahead of the Jetta and behind the Subaru.

The three cars offer fun and performance at an affordable price wrapped in different packages. Not everyone can justify a two-seat roadster in their life, but a four-door Jetta JLI still offers some performance without scarifying utility.
