BMW Reveals Pokémon-Themed Mini Aceman Concept At Gamescom

The Mini Aceman concept vehicle was only unveiled a month ago, but it already has a noticeable change. That’s especially true if you’re one of the world’s millions of Pokémon fans, and if you’re attending Gamescon 2022 this year, you’ll be able to witness this shocking upgrade firsthand. Say hello to the Mini Concept Aceman, who now has… Pokémon Mode.

What does this mean exactly? We already know that Mini equips the Aceman with a high-tech interior that includes a large centre OLED screen and lighting effects that project images throughout the cabin. The centre screen in Pokémon Mode begins with a Poké Ball that opens to reveal everyone’s favourite electric critter, Pikachu. And the sequence isn’t limited to the centre screen; Pokémon Mode shoots lightning across the dash, eventually shooting more blue and yellow lightning streaks outside the car.

Unfortunately for Pokémon fans, the Mini Concept Aceman is a one-time vehicle designed to showcase the brand’s near future in terms of technology and design language. That means you won’t be able to purchase a new Mini with Pokémon-themed modifications anytime soon, but the automaker does have a consolation prize. Mini will have toy versions of the Aceman in Pokémon guise available at the event, in addition to the full-size concept car. After all, the automaker is the primary sponsor of the merchandise area.

Perhaps the most interesting question is whether future Minis will support Pokémon mode. There’s no doubt that the animated series that evolved into a video game franchise has a huge fan base, but Mini is staying mum for the time being.

“Gamification will play an increasingly important role in the Mini of the future, providing a unique experience for our customers,” said Mini head Stefanie Wurst. “The shared joy of the franchise brings together two iconic characters who are a perfect match, as well as millions of fans, in collaboration with Pokémon. This is how Gamescom 2022, as an event for modern fandom, gaming, and pop culture, will reach a completely new audience.”

The Mini Concept Aceman with its new Pokémon Mode will be on display from August 24-28 at Gamescon 2022 in Cologne, Germany. Those looking for more driving action in their automotive games should listen to the Rambling About Cars podcast on sim racing, which is available below.
