Mysuru-Bengaluru Highway Turns into ‘river’ as Cars, Buses Float

Visuals and viral videos show vehicles almost getting washed away in the strong currents of the floodwater in the Mysuru-Bengaluru highway.

Heavy rains have lashed the Bengaluru-Mysuru highway near Ramanagara, disrupting traffic and turning the highway into a river. Parts of the newly-constructed Bengaluru-Mysuru highway stretch in Ramanagara have become flooded with water as a result of heavy rains over the last few days, while various images circulating on the internet show submerged or floating cars and buses.

Visuals and viral videos also show vehicles being washed away in the floodwater’s strong currents. To avoid getting stuck in the flooded stretch, Ramanagara police have issued an advisory advising commuters to avoid the Bengaluru-Mysuru highway and instead reach Mysuru from Bengaluru via the Kanakapura or Kunigal routes.

This caused traffic to be diverted, resulting in slow-moving vehicles and extremely long traffic jams on the highway. According to reports, a state transportation bus became stranded in the area after attempting to pass through a flooded underpass. Rainwater entered both parked and moving vehicles, prompting some people to abandon their vehicles and flee the scene.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Bengaluru will have cloudy skies with light to moderate rainfall in the coming days. Thunderstorms with lightning and light to moderate rainfall are expected in Bengaluru, Ramanagara, Mysuru, Mandya, Kolar, Tumkur, Chamarajanagar, and Hassan regions of south Karnataka on Monday, according to the Bengaluru meteorological centre.

In a separate incident, a Maruti Swift skidded off the Chhindwara-Nagpur Highway and toppled into a field due to slick road conditions as heavy rain showers hit many parts of the country, causing widespread inconvenience. Madhya Pradesh has also experienced heavy rains in recent days.
