Skoda Teases New Design Language With Mysteriously Blurry SUV

It looks boxier than current models and may or may not be an EV.

Skoda’s annual media conference was conducted today, after most of the other Volkswagen Group brands held theirs earlier this month. The only delicious item given during this morning’s event, which was livestreamed online, was the vague promise of a new design language called “Modern Solid.” More information will be released in the second half of the year, but the Czech automaker has released a teaser image in the meanwhile.

The official rendering, which is intentionally obscured, appears to portray a crossover, maybe positioned below the Kodiaq and Enyaq depicted below in their “coupe” appearance. The small overhangs and closed-off front fascia lead us to believe it’s roughly the same size as the compact Karoq, and that it’s probably electric. It’s unclear whether we’re looking at a production vehicle or a concept, but given Skoda’s track record, another Vision-badged showcar might be on the way.

Skoda has previously stated that three new electric vehicles will be released before the end of the decade, all of which will be less expensive and smaller than the Enyaq. Thomas Schafer, the company’s retiring CEO, announced one of them will be an entry-level city car during today’s news conference. This can’t be it because it appears to be much larger than a replacement for the Citigo-e iV.

The one-piece headlight, signified by the vertical LED strip for the daytime running lights, is another telltale clue that this is an EV. Skoda crossovers with conventional engines still have a split headlamp assembly. At the back, the mysterious vehicle appears to have a thin light bar. Overall, the car seems a bit boxier than what we’re used to seeing from products born in Mladá Boleslav.

Our assumptions will have to suffice until Skoda begins to discuss its new “Modern Solid” design approach later this year. The 2022 Paris Motor Show is set to take place in mid-October, so maybe that’ll be when and where we see the concept? We’ll have to wait and see.
