Skoda To Discontinue Superb And Octavia In India From Feb 2023

Skoda Auto India is supposed to discontinue the Superb and Octavia sedans for the domestic marke By February 2023. These two high-end sedans will no longer be produced in large quantities starting on March 31, 2023, or in just over seven months.

Beginning on April 1, 2023, the BSVI emission standards enter their second phase.

It has been claimed that in order to comply with the stricter emission regulations, the current EA888 evo3 DQ381-7F drivetrain will need to be replaced by the evo4 engine. Car manufacturers must meet the required emission targets in RDE (Real Driving Emissions) conditions in order to participate in Phase 2, and introducing the evo4 for a single market may prove to be expensive.

The EA888 evo4 DQ381-7A drivetrain (A stands for all-wheel drive) from Russia is an alternative option, but it was rejected for India due to the fuel efficiency and costs involved because the volume sales of both the Superb and Octavia would be low. Starting in February 2023, the Kodiaq and Tiguan SUVs will use this specific unit created by Audi AG.

What Will It Affect

If the rumour is accurate, the departure of the Superb and Octavia would leave Volkswagen and Skoda with just three models each starting in April 2023. (Skoda Kodiaq, Skoda Kushaq, Skoda Slavia, VW Taigun, VW Tiguan and VW Virtus). It should be noted that the Kodiaq and Tiguan are already offered in limited quantities in the Indian market.

Skoda India 2.0 project

With a significant investment of more than one billion euros, Skoda took on the India 2.0 project, which is how the heavily localised MQB A0 IN modular architecture came about. Currently, it supports the Virtus, Kushaq, Taigun, and Slavia. A 1.5-liter turbocharged gasoline engine and a 1.0-liter turbocharged gasoline engine power each of these four models.

While the latter cranks out 150 PS and 250 Nm of peak torque, the former has a maximum power output of 110 PS and 175 Nm. Which are paired with the manual and automatic transmission options.
