Toyota’s Urban Cruiser launched for South Africa

The collaboration of the Japanese automakers, Toyota and Suzuki, of building definite cars for each other, aimed for specific markets is all known to us. South Africa was first auto market (other than india) to taste this agreement; last year Toyota had launched the Starlet hatchback, which was a re branded Suzuki Baleno. Taking it forward Toyota has launched it Urban Cruiser in South Africa.

Technical details

The Urban Cruiser will be offered in three variants Xi, Xs and Xr for South Africa. With all equipped with 1.5-litre naturally-aspirated four-cylinder petrol engine, and offers outputs of 77 kW (103.26bhp) and 138 Nm. Speaking of fuel consumptionToyota claims an average of 16 KMPL. The Urban Cruiser is priced, starting at RM 247K for the 1.5 Xi, where as the 1.5 Xr automatic retails at RM 315K which makes it slightly expensive than its sibling Suzuki Vitara Brezza.

Some other Standard features across the range include:

keyless-entry with push start,  power-adjustable mirrors, air-conditioning, tilt-adjustable steering, LED headlamps, electric windows and LED daytime running lights and rear park distance control. With all models are available with the Toyota Connect telematics system which includes an in-car Wi-Fi hotspot and a complimentary free 15 Gb of data.

As of safety, the Toyota Urban Cruiser gets dual front airbags and anti-lock brakes with EBD across its range. As offered the manual gearbox is a five-speed unit, while the automatic has four forward gears with all comes with front-wheel drive.

The Toyota Urban Cruiser will be sold with a 3-year/100 000 km warranty and a 3 services/45 000 km service plan (Intervals are every 12 months or 15 000 km). Customers can also purchase an additional service plan and warranty options.

The compact SUV will find favor as an affordable car from the local buyers. The Indian-built crossover steps into the path of several crossovers in the market. The Urban Cruiser is likely to get a good response because of the company’s reputation and popularity. Will it be a knockout in the market? Only time will tell.
