The Volkswagen Golf R 20 Years edition made its official debut in May of this year, but the hardcore hot hatch is back with a new record. With a lap time of 7:47.31 minutes, the model is now officially the fastest Volkswagen R-branded vehicle to ever lap the Nurburgring, beating the time of a standard Golf R by around four seconds.
To commemorate two decades since the release of the Golf R32, the first and original VW to bear the R logo, the Golf R 20 Years was tested around the legendary German track by touring car racer and Volkswagen R development driver Benjamin Leuchter. The car was able to reach a top speed of nearly 165 miles per hour (265 kilometres per hour) in certain sections of the circuit thanks to hardware upgrades.
“I can drive here on the Nurburgring in this car and then go to the baker’s or the DIY store.” “The vehicle is really an all-rounder that can do everything,” Leuchter says of his driving experience. His statement emphasises the versatility of the special edition Golf R, which can be used both on and off the track.
While it lacks the V6 engine found in its predecessor, the Golf R 20 Years edition is powered by a heavily modified version of Volkswagen’s 2.0-liter turbocharged engine. In this application, the four-cylinder TSI engine produces 328 horsepower (245 kilowatts), compared to 315 hp (235 kW) for the standard Golf R. With these figures, the hot hatch is effectively the most powerful production Golf in the world.
The acceleration from 0 to 62 miles per hour (0 to 100 kilometres per hour) takes only 4.6 seconds, and the top speed is electronically limited to 168 miles per hour (270 kilometres per hour), implying that the car was very close to its limits on the Nurburgring. Other enhancements to track performance include a standard R-Performance package with new Special and Drift driving profiles that are exclusive to the model.
Volkswagen will sell the Golf R 20 Years edition until the spring of 2023, making it a limited production hot hatch.
