VW Golf Wagon Gets R32 Conversion And Big Turbo, Packs 1,080-HP Punch

Listen to this heavily modified fourth-generation Volkswagen Golf waggon at full volume. It has a massive turbo and produces 1,080 horsepower (805 kilowatts). The end result is an incredible sound.

This car came from Denmark, and the builder put in an absurd amount of effort to create it. He transplanted the drivetrain from a Golf R32, which was an all-wheel-drive version of the fourth-generation model, into the waggon. But that’s only the beginning.

The R32 comes standard with a 3.2-liter naturally aspirated VR6 engine. Bored cylinders bring the displacement closer to 3.3 litres, and the crankshaft, rods, and pistons have been upgraded. The engine bay is dominated by a massive Garrett G42-1450 turbo and a large air intake. The fuel cell, which is located in the rear cargo area, is the only thing small about this vehicle.

The gearbox is from a fifth-generation Volkswagen Golf. It does, however, have a conversion to work sequentially. The driver must use the clutch during shifts while cruising, but no-lift gear changes are possible at full throttle.

Both axles have Haldex limited-slip differentials to handle the power. The brakes are from an Audi RS4 from 2006 to 2008. KW V3 coilovers were used for the suspension.

Because of the noise and rapid acceleration, full-throttle pulls in this beast appear to be a violent experience. The occupants can be seen being pressed into their seats, and the guys in this video clearly enjoy the experience.

A separate video (above) from the same channel shows this R32 racing against a tuned Audi RS6 with 830 hp (619 kW). You’d think that a 250-hp (186-kW) difference would give the VW a clear advantage, but the situation is far more complicated. Because its massive turbo can’t really spool up from a start, the less powerful Audi is faster in the quarter-mile. They then race from a roll, and the R32 waggon still doesn’t blow away the RS6.
