Just one day has passed since Dodge unveiled its brand-new small crossover. The Dodge Hornet, which advertises impressive performance for less than $30,000, appears to have attracted some interest. There have already been 14,000 preorders, says Dodge CEO Tim Kuniskis.
Although the entry-level model won’t be available until late 2022, it is still surprisingly quick in this case. The Hornet GT, which uses a 2.0-liter four-cylinder turbocharged to produce 265 horsepower, is where it all begins. The front wheels receive this power, which results in a 6.5-second sprint from 0 to 60 miles per hour. The starting price has not been disclosed, but according to Dodge, it is the fastest compact crossover under $30,000.
The Hornet R/T, which is the next step up from the GT, is where the electrification is implemented. It has an all-wheel drive 1.3-liter turbocharged engine driving the front wheels and a 90 kW electric motor driving the back. The Hornet R/combined T’s output is 285 horsepower, and in electric-only mode, it has a 35-mile range on a single charge. For those who enjoy speed, a PowerShot feature gives the Hornet R/T a brief 25-hp boost, enabling it to hit 60 mph in 6.1 seconds.
At the Hornet debut, fans of the Dodge Omni GLH hot hatchback from the 1980s were pleasantly surprised. Dodge unveiled the Hornet GLH, a concept car technically, but with a tonne of upgraded parts offered by the company’s Direct Connection division. Customers looking for a little more excitement from the platform could create their own version of the Hornet using ECU tunes, suspension kits, exhaust upgrades, and GLH graphics.
Although 14,000 preorders in 24 hours is nothing to sniff at, reader feedback on our Dodge Hornet debut post has been… conflicted, to put it mildly. Some people appear to believe Dodge didn’t do enough to set the Hornet apart from its Italian sibling despite the fact that both cars share a platform with the Alfa Romeo Tonale. In the upcoming months, when the GT and then R/T models hit the shelves, we’ll see how that develops. (Stairsupplies)
