America’s Police (Cop) Cars Fleet: Every New Cop Car In USA

There aren’t many police “cars” left patrolling the streets.

Almost any make and model can be used as a police car in the United States. However, several automakers offer vehicles that are, for the most part, equipped and ready for police duty directly off the factory floor. They are built and sold by Ford, Dodge, and Chevrolet, as they have for decades. Going over the offerings of each company indicates that there aren’t many police “vehicles” left.

Law enforcement agencies have followed customers’ preferences for SUVs and trucks, which are currently the most common police vehicles in the United States. Chevrolet, Ford, and Dodge, on the other hand, continue to provide a choice of police vehicles, none of which you’d want to see in your rearview mirror. See here for a look at America’s police enforcement fleet.

1. Ram 1500 Special Service Vehicle

  • Engine: 5.7-Liter V8
  • Output: 395 hp (291 kW), 410 lb-ft (555 Nm)

There is a new Ram 1500 for 2019, but don’t expect to see it in your local police department’s fleet. For that, Ram delivers the last-gen Ram 1500 Classic that’s suited for patrol. Ram provides it with rear axle ratios of 3.21:1 and 3.92:1. Ram also includes on-the-fly four-wheel drive and rear in-floor storage boxes.

2. Ford Transit Prisoner Transport Vehicle

  • Output: 275 hp (205 kW), 262 lb-ft (355 Nm) / 310 hp (231 kW), 400 lb-ft (542 Nm)
  • When it comes to transporting prisoners, Ford has a solution: the Transit Police Transport Vehicle. It’s a Transit that Ford sells in three roof heights and three body lengths, with two alternative engines that pair with the same 10-speed automatic transmission. For police work, Ford also provides the all-electric E-Transit.

3. Ford Mustang Mach-E

Although there is no official Ford Mustang Mach-E police car, departments in Europe and the United States, such as the New York Police Department, have added one to their fleets. Ford launched a 2021 pilot programme to evaluate the Mach-E for police duty as the carmaker investigates creating purpose-built EVs for government agencies such as law enforcement.

4. Ford F-150 Police Responder

  • 3.5-Liter V6 EcoBoost
  • 400 hp (298 kW) 500 lb-ft (677 Nm)

The Ford F-150 Police Responder is a truck that blends off-road capability with on-road pursuit performance. It has a faster top speed, now hitting 120 miles per hour (193 kilometres per hour). The F-150 also offers a maximum towing capacity of 11,200 pounds (5,080 kg) and the newest technology features from Ford.

5. Ford Explorer Police Interceptor Utility

  • 3.3-liter V6 hybrid / 3.0-liter V6 EcoBoost / 3.3L V6
  • 318 hp (237 kW), 322 lb-ft (436 Nm) /400 hp (298 kW), 415 lb-ft (562 Nm) / 285 hp (212 kW), 260 lb-ft (352 Nm)
  • Many law enforcement departments now use the Ford Police Interceptor Utility as their primary police vehicle. Ford worked hard to make it a great replacement for the Crown Vic/Taurus. It is built on the Explorer and distinguishes itself from the competition with a diverse powertrain lineup. Ford sells it as a hybrid, which is the vehicle’s standard powerplant. Full-time all-wheel drive and a 10-speed automatic transmission are also standard.

6. Ford Expedition Special Service Vehicle

  • Engine: 3.5-liter V6 EcoBoost
  • Output: 375 hp (279 kW), 470 lb-ft (637 Nm)
  • The Expedition is the Explorer’s larger police sister, however it is less frequently seen. The Expedition’s wider size makes it even more adaptable, allowing police to swap the third-row seats with extra cargo space for additional equipment. For even more storage, Ford offers the Expedition Max in police trim.

7. Dodge Durango Pursuit

  • Engine: 3.6-liter V6 / 5.7-liter V8
  • Output: 293 hp (218 kW), 260 lb-ft (352 Nm) / 360 hp (268 kW), 390 lb-ft (528 Nm)

Like the Charger, the Durango is one of the more stylish police SUVs out of the bunch. Dodge beefs up the SUV’s safety structure, offers a K-9 friendly automatic temperature control system, and installs high-performance brakes.

8. Dodge Charger Pursuit

  • Engine: 3.6-liter V6 / 5.7-liter V8
  • Output: 300 hp (220 kW), 264 lb-ft (357 Nm) / 370 hp (275 kW), 395 lb-ft (535 Nm)
  • The Dodge Charger is one of the few vehicles on our list with good cause. Its threatening appearance has kept it a fixture in many local enforcement organisations across the country for nearly two decades, even as SUVs become more popular. Expect to see the Charger following you for several years.

9. Chevrolet Tahoe Police Pursuit Vehicle

  • Engine: 5.3-liter V8
  • Output: 355 hp (264 kW), 383 lb-ft (519 Nm)
  • Without headlights and a police-rated suspension, no police vehicle is complete, and the Chevrolet Tahoe Police Pursuit Vehicle does not disappoint. It’s the go-to Chevy cop car for departments around the country, with a large cargo room, updated brakes, and new looks. A suite of driver assistance functions such as frontal collision alert, lane keep assist, front pedestrian braking, following distance indicator, and more are available as options.

12. Chevrolet Bolt Special Service Vehicle

  • Powertrain: Single Permanent Magnetic Drive Motor
  • Output: 200 hp (149 kW), 266 lb-ft (360 Nm)
