Mahindra’s Thar is expected to come in a new range of colours in the next year. The 2WD Thar version, which is anticipated to go on sale shortly, has been seen looking good in Bronze. The 4WD variant may also get access to this new colour. Along with the current 150PS 2-liter turbo-petrol engine, the 2WD Thar will also be equipped with a smaller 118PS 1.5-liter diesel engine. Both a six-speed manual and an automatic gearbox are still available as options. This model is estimated to start around Rs 11 lakh (ex-showroom) in price.
There are six different hues of the Mahindra’s Thar that are now available: Aqua Marine, Galaxy Grey, Rocky Beige, Mystic Copper, Red Rage, and Napoli Black. The 2WD version is anticipated to maintain these current colours, with the exciting addition of the new bronze tone. Additionally, there are rumours Mahindra may release a Thar model in white.
Mahindra is putting a reworked 1.5-liter diesel engine from the XUV300 under the Thar’s hood for the 4X2 type, replacing the 4X4’s 2.2-liter engine. ?To fulfil performance standards, the 2WD Thar will nevertheless keep the same 2-liter turbo-petrol engine with 150PS from the 4WD. Like the 4X4 diesel Mahindra’s Thar , the 2WD Thar will also come with an optional mechanical locking differential (MLD), even though it will not have a low range transmission. It is anticipated that the 2WD Thar will be offered in hardtop and soft top configurations, and in AXE (O) and LX grades.
The higher-end 2WD Mahindra’s Thar is expected to cost between Rs 11 lakh and Rs 14 lakh (ex-showroom), which is expected to be comparable to the 4X4’s entry-level AXE (O) trim. This puts the less competent Thar in a competitive position against the incoming Maruti Suzuki Jimny. The Jimny, which is anticipated to come with a five-door form with both 2WD and 4WD choices, would probably face stiff competition from Mahindra’s Thar. Moreover, Mahindra is already working on a five-door Thar variant that would be longer than four metres, setting it apart from the smaller Jimny model.
