Rumours about a McLaren SUV were fanned by the automaker directly back in December 2021 with its one-off electric SUV racer.
McLaren, the British hypercar marquee, may join the ranks of exotic car brands that have recently adopted SUVs. According to McLaren CEO Michael Leiters, the automaker is currently considering the development of an SUV. The current CEO’s love of SUVs is a major driving force behind this debate. During an interview with Autocar, Get admitted that he enjoys SUVs and considers the segment to be appealing and still growing. He also stated that the possibility of a McLaren SUV is being discussed at the company.

Leiter has been associated with other car brands like Ferrari and Porsche, where he was involved with the respective automakers’ SUV projects. He also indicated that even if McLaren rolls out an SUV, it will come with the automaker’s DNA integrated into the vehicle. He clarified that McLaren would not make any classic SUV.
Interestingly, rumours about a McLaren SUV were fanned by the automaker directly back in December 2021. It debuted a one-off electric SUV racer for competition in the Extreme E championship. Rumour is that the automaker is working on an all-electric SUV that will hit showrooms sometime later this decade.

Despite initial scepticism, several automakers, including Ferrari, Lamborghini, Bentley, Rolls-Royce, and Porsche, adopted SUVs. Porsche continues to enjoy tremendous success with SUVs, with Cayenne and Macan sales exceeding all other Porsche models combined in 2021. The Lamborghini Urus accounts for more than 60% of the company’s total sales. In just a few weeks, Ferrari will unveil its first SUV.
