Tata Motor Will Challenge Hyundai Creta With Two New SUVs – Report
The competition for the second slot on the list of the top-selling vehicle brands in India has always been heated between the Indian auto behemoth Tata Motors and the South Korean carmaker Hyundai. Tata has even managed to dethrone Hyundai a handful of times in the recent few months. However, Tata Motors has consistently failed to outperform Hyundai’s Creta in the compact SUV sector. For several years, the Creta has ruled this area like a boss. However, it appears like Tata has had enough and is intending to double down on the market in order to dethrone the Creta with the introduction of two new SUVs, the Curvv and the Sierra.
Tata now owns the Harrier, which began as a Creta competitor but has since grown in price and now sits in the mid-size sector. In order to take market share away from Hyundai, Tata Motors plans to debut the Curvv Coupe SUV and the Sierra SUV in the sector in the near future. The Curvv will most likely debut in 2024, followed by the Sierra in 2025.
The Curvv will begin its life as an EV, but it has been rumoured that Tata is also aiming to sell the coupe-like SUV with a 1.2l TGDI petrol engine, which it recently displayed with the Curvv concept at the 2023 Auto Expo. The Curvv will most likely be 4.4 metres long and will compete with the Hyundai Creta and Seltos. It will have a distinctive tapering roof like a coupe, which may appeal to a new demographic of purchasers.
If the style of the Curvv does not appeal to you, Tata Motors is preparing to provide a more muscular and manly SUV in the form of the Sierra. The Sierra will also be another SUV from Tata that will compete in the compact SUV category with the Hyundai Creta and Kia Seltos. The Sierra will be released in 2025 and will draw design inspiration and emblems from the brand’s renowned Sierra SUV.
Tata Motors has not yet revealed the powertrains of each vehicle, but it has been revealed that both SUVs, which will be built on Tata’s Sigma platform, would offer two drivetrain options. The first will be an electric powertrain, while the second will be the recently announced T-GDI turbo-petrol engines.
Tata Motors has kept the specs, range, and battery capacity of the EV drivetrains for the Curvv and Sierra under wraps for the time being, but we will learn more about them shortly. Meanwhile, Tata Motors is expected to provide the Curvv 1.2-litre turbocharged petrol engine for the ICE iterations. This mill is expected to produce a maximum output of 125 PS and a peak torque of 225 Nm. On the other hand, it will provide the Sierra with a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine capable of producing roughly 160 horsepower and a torque output of around 250 Nm.
