In a daring step ahead of the assembly election, the Maharashtra government today declared a complete toll waiver for light motor vehicles at all five toll booths on Mumbai entry points. The toll exemption for entering Mumbai will take effect at midnight (12 a.m.) on October 15, 2024, and will apply to vehicles such as automobiles, jeeps, vans, and compact trucks.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde allegedly made the announcement during a cabinet meeting earlier today. Shinde later confirmed the announcement to the media. The five toll booths that currently serve as entry points into Mumbai are: Dahisar, Mulund West (LBS Road), Vashi, Airoli, and Mulund East.
Aside from the Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena, the Raj Thackeray-led Maharashtra Navnirman Sena and the Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena have also called for the abolition of tolls at Mumbai entry ports. Aaditya Thackeray, a Shiv Sena leader, has reaffirmed the demand for toll exemptions.
It should be noted that the exemption from tolls has just been announced for entry into Mumbai. This signifies that automobiles must pay tolls when leaving the city. Currently, the entry toll for a light motor vehicle is Rs 45.
