The latest police vehicle from Ford, which is based on the F-150 Lighting Pro EV pickup, has been introduced. The Special Service Vehicle (SSV), which is available with regular or extended batteries, has undergone a number of modifications to serve its new function as a police car.
On the outside, the F-150 Lighting Pro SSV receives a bull bar at the front bumper, warning beacons mounted on the roof (LED lights), and a suitable livery with the writing “All-Electric Police Special Service Vehicle.”
The seats’ decreased side bolsters and police-grade heavy-duty material upholstery make it simpler for holstered policemen to enter and depart the car. Like vinyl flooring, the upholstery on the back seats is easy to keep clean. A reinforced instrument panel top box that is intended for mounting additional police equipment is located above the 12-inch digital instrument cluster and 12-inch SYNC4 infotainment touchscreen on the dashboard.
The Ford Pro platform, which has tools for more effective fleet management, and the Ford Co-Pilot 360 ADAS suite are also standard features. Besides the rear bed area, with the Pro Power onboard generator, officers can also utilize the Mega Power Frunk at the front, with 14.1 cubic feet of lockable cargo space and an additional 220-amp DC to DC power source.
The F-150 Lightning Pro SSV, according to Ford, is made to “address particular departmental demands outside of pursuit circumstances, like as assisting at an accident or crime scene, or offering departments the option to tow a boat or a trailer.” Still, the automaker is providing both standard-range and extended-range battery options for the EV pickup. The former improves it to 580 hp (432 kW/ 588 PS) for a 10,000-pound towing capacity, whereas the former produces 452 hp (337 kW/ 458 PS) for a 7,700-pound towing capacity. In all scenarios, all four wheels receive a 775 lb-ft (1,051 Nm) torque.
“We’re delighted to provide America’s first electric police pickup truck to local government clients who can use the vehicle’s game-changing technology to help enhance their productivity,” said Nate Oscarson, Ford Pro’s national government sales manager. The electric drivetrain may help to potentially lower fuel and scheduled maintenance costs, and the Mega Power Frunk offers additional lockable storage on top of the purpose-built police additions our customers have come to expect from the industry leader in police vehicles. Pro Power Onboard can be used as a mobile power source to illuminate evening accident scenes on the highway.
We don’t anticipate the particular details of the 2023 Ford F-150 Lightning Pro SSV to change significantly from the ordinary, non-police F-150 Lightning when they are announced later this summer.
