Volvo Cars India plans to launch the new XC90 facelift in the nation by early March 2025. The Swedish automaker’s flagship SUV made its global debut in September 2024, and Volvo Cars India is now set to deliver it to our shores. Since its debut in 2014, the second-generation Volvo XC90 has undergone two major redesigns. Globally, the SUV will continue to be available with both mild-hybrid and strong hybrid powertrains; however, India is expected to receive only the former, at least initially.
The powertrain hasn’t altered much. You still get the 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine with 48V mild-hybrid technology, producing 251 horsepower and 360 Nm of torque. There is also a plug-in hybrid version, which uses the same 2.0-liter engine but adds an 18.8 kWh battery pack and electric motor. Volvo states that this model has a combined range of around 800 km, with an EV-only range of 70 km.
The XC90 comes standard with an automatic transmission, all-wheel drive (AWD), and the mild-hybrid version can accelerate from 0 to 100 kmph in 7.7 seconds. Volvo has also modified the SUV’s suspension system to incorporate Frequency Selective Damping (FSD) technology, which allows each damper to react to changing road locations.
Visually, the new XC90 has undergone significant changes and now resembles the all-electric EX90. Instead of a panel in front, you get an active grille with a new pattern and a slimmer front bumper. The chrome elements are kept to a minimum, while the iconic Thor’s Hammer LED daytime running lights remain a standout feature. The SUV’s shape remains virtually unchanged; however, a new alloy wheel design is available, and the Volvo’s vertical light signature receives a split design that looks really stylish.
The XC90’s interior architecture remains same, but it now features a larger touchscreen infotainment system that extends out from the dashboard rather than being buried in it. The manufacturer has also enhanced the interior ergonomics by adding more storage space in the center console, including an extra cupholder, and relocating the wireless phone charger behind the central tunnel, separate from the main storage area. The XC90 facelift also comes with a Bowers & Wilkins High Fidelity audio system.
