Govt Plans To Automated Testing Stations Mandatory From 2023 Onwards

Starting in April of next year, the government aims to make vehicle fitness testing using Automated Testing Stations mandatory in a staggered way. The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways said on Friday that a draught notification for required vehicle fitness testing via an ATS has been submitted for public feedback. The many tests necessary to assess a vehicle’s health are automated using mechanical equipment at an Automated Testing Station (ATS).

The need will be implemented incrementally. From April 1, 2023, big freight trucks and heavy passenger vehicles will be required to undergo ATS fitness testing. according to the draught notice. From June 1, 2024, the requirement will be mandatory for medium goods vehicles, medium passenger vehicles, and light motor vehicles (transport).

Last year, the ministry stated that institutions such as special purpose vehicles, state governments, enterprises, associations, and private bodies may be permitted to operate ATS for the purpose of assessing the fitness of both personal and transport vehicles.
