Ducati Announces Deal With Volkswagen To Assemble Bikes In Argentina

A VW plant will assemble knocked-down Scramblers for sales in the local market.

Ducati and Volkswagen Group Argentina have formally confirmed that some Ducati motorcycles would be assembled in Córdoba, Argentina for the local market. Workers at the Córdoba Industrial Center are expected to start assembling completely knocked-down (CKD) bikes by the end of 2022.

What kind of motorcycles are we discussing? Ducati claims it would begin with the Ducati Scrambler Icon, which makes sense given that the Scrambler series has proven to be the most popular Ducati model among Argentinian bike purchasers thus far. There are now seven Ducati dealerships in Argentina, selling the entire Ducati and Ducati Scrambler motorcycle series.

“The Argentinian motorcycle market is quite intriguing; Ducati has a strong position in this nation, where we have achieved outstanding results over the years, both in terms of volumes and market share,” said Ducati worldwide sales and after-sales vice president Francesco Milicia in a statement.

“We have a wonderful relationship with the Volkswagen Group in Argentina, which distributes our bikes, and it is because of this strong partnership that we are able to take this critical step that will help us enhance our position in this market even more,” he continued.

Why the Volkswagen Group and Ducati? Audi AG, which also controls Volkswagen, bought Ducati in 2012, for those unfamiliar. Despite the fact that both Ducati and Volkswagen have been under the Audi AG umbrella for the previous decade, this is the first time the two companies have joined together. It is also only the third Ducati plant outside of Italy, with the others being in Brazil and Thailand.

“Argentina is a key market for Volkswagen in Latin America. “We will continue to enhance our brand in the region with vehicles that are increasingly fitted to our consumers’ needs,” Volkswagen Latin America executive chairman Pablo Di Si said in a statement.

“Beginning to construct Ducati motorcycles in Córdoba is a great joy,” he continued, “since Volkswagen Group Argentina will be the first VW Group subsidiary in the world to do so.” It’s unknown whether other VW subsidiaries will follow suit in the future, but the pact should benefit Argentinian riders.
