The Suzuki Jimny Beat The Hummer H2 In Most Off-Road Challenges

The Suzuki Jimny has proven to be capable off-road, but can it compete with the powerful Hummer H2? In order to determine which vehicle would win in a David vs Goliath contest, Carwow took both cars into the countryside and put them to the test in a variety of off-road situations.

Both the Suzuki Jimny (2018-present) and the Hummer H2 (2002-2009) are body-on-frame SUVs with all-wheel drive, naturally aspirated engines, boxy forms, and excellent ground clearance / off-road angles. But this is the extent of their similarity.

The Suzuki is powered by a 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine that produces 101 horsepower (75 kW / 102 PS) and 130 Newton-meters (96 lb-ft) of torque. This appears insignificant in comparison to the Hummer’s 6.2-liter V8’s 393 horsepower (293 kW/ 398 PS) and 563 Nm (415 lb-ft) of torque. The Jimny weighs 1,070 kg (2,359 pounds), but the “huge, fat Hummer,” as described by Matt Watson, weighs 3,000 kg (6,614 pounds). The Suzuki is a whole 1,619 mm (63.7 inches) shorter than the Hummer, which also has a significantly larger footprint.

In spite of the significant disparity in power output, the nimble and lightweight Suzuki is the easiest to manoeuvre in tight turns and accelerates the fastest uphill. The aforementioned contrasts are more than apparent in the off-road obstacles. Although the Hummer H2 has aftermarket mud/terrain tyres, which give it an advantage over the Suzuki, several of its components are broken or inoperable, which restricts the vehicle’s otherwise acceptable capabilities. In the end, the Suzuki prevails in the majority of contests, with the Hummer eking out a few victories thanks to its robust engine and truck-like attitude.

The Suzuki Jimny is currently priced in the UK at £20k ($24k), whereas importing a secondhand Hummer will cost you £45k ($54k). In other words, you can buy two Jimnys for the price of one H2, and the gap is even more pronounced if we factor in operating expenses. Which one would you choose then, if you wanted to go off-roading on the weekend?
