2023 Ford Super Duty Boasts Class-Leading 40,000-Pound Towing

This week, Ford released more information about the capabilities of the 2023 Ford F-Series Super Duty, reinforcing its position as the king of the heavy-hauler hill. The large pickup now has a class-leading 40,000-pound towing capacity and, depending on the configuration, up to 8,000 pounds of payload thanks to a new high-output 1,200 pound-foot diesel engine and modifications to its gasoline options.

For the 2023 model year, the Super Doots’ optional 6.7-liter Power Stroke V8 turbo diesel engine will be available with 475 horsepower and 1.050 lb.-ft of torque. Ford can now claim the title of best-in-class performance thanks to a new High Output variant that cranks the volume up to 500 horsepower and 1,200 lb.-ft. of torque.

For the F-450 Dual Rear-Wheel Regular Cab configuration with the Max Towing Package and the 30,000-pound conventional tow rating for the F-450 Crew Cab, Ford has a class-leading 6.7-liter HO diesel engine. Additionally, it defeats the F-250’s 23,000-pound gooseneck record and wins the best-in-subclass awards for F-350/3500 segment gooseneck and conventional towing (38,000 and 28,000 pounds, respectively).

On the options list for the F-Series’ gasoline engine, there are also significant changes. A new 6.8-liter block that produces 405 horsepower (20 more than before) and 445 lb.-ft. of torque has replaced the previous 6.2-liter base V8 (a gain of 15 lb.-ft.) The 7.3-liter overhead valve gas V8 gains 10 lb.-ft. of torque and is now rated at 485 lb.-ft. of torque and 430 horsepower (unchanged). When combined with the F-350 Dual Rear Wheel Regular Cab 4X2 chassis and the Heavy-Duty Payload Package, the large-displacement gasoline configuration wins again with a best-in-class 8,000 pound payload.

The generous payload capabilities are somewhat idiot-proofed by available onboard scales that dynamically measure bed weight as you load it in, and an optional smart hitch aids in balancing heavy trailers. Additionally, the 2023 Super Duty can be ordered with Ford’s Pro Trailer Hitch steering assist, a 360-degree Trailer Camera Package, and turn-by-turn Trailer Navigation, which chooses routes that are trailer-friendly and, whenever possible, avoids narrow roads and unnecessarily tight turns.

A 5G modem has been added to the interior’s standard FordPass Connect, which powers the connected Sync features and Wi-Fi hotspot. The technologies Tailgate Down Camera and Reverse Park Aid, which enable the rear camera and parking distance sensors to function properly when the pickup’s tailgate is open, will be added to the list of options in the spring of 2023.

Orders for the 2023 Ford F-Series Super Duty are now being accepted. Prices for the base F-250 XL model, which is $3,525 more expensive than last year’s model but comes with a bigger, more powerful base engine and more standard features, start at $45,765 (including destination), and the first vehicles are
