Volkswagen Tiguan R-Line Launched: At Rs 49 Lakh

Volkswagen India has unveiled the new Tiguan R-Line in India for Rs 49 lakh (introductory, ex-showroom). The Tiguan R-Line is the first model of the new-generation Tiguan to arrive in India after its global launch in 2023. The new model arrives in India via CBU and is significantly more expensive than the SUV it replaces, which was previously priced at Rs 38.17 lakh (ex-showroom). Volkswagen India has announced that delivery of the SUV will begin on April 23.

Starting with the appearance, the new Tiguan follows VW’s most recent design philosophy, with a sleeker, more streamlined shape than its predecessor. Notable design features include an enclosed grille flanked by sleek projector headlamps, a large air dam on the front bumper, sharp-looking alloy wheels, and a linked taillamp at the back. Buyers can choose from six exterior colours: Persimmon Red, Nightshade Blue, Grenadilla Black, Onyx White Mother of Pearl, Cipressino Green, and Oyster Silver.

The cabin adheres to VW’s new minimalist design template, with limited physical switchgear visible and a dashboard dominated by a massive free-standing 15.1-inch center touchscreen. Notable design aspects include a broad expanse of gloss black plastic on the dashboard and doors with unique patterning and ambient back lighting. The touchscreen serves as the nerve center for most in-car controls, while the traditional gear selector has been relocated to the steering column. The new Tiguan instead features a rotary controller with an in-built touch display between the seats, flanked by switches for engine stop/start and electronic parking brake.

The new Tiguan includes standard features such as a touchscreen, a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster, multi-zone climate control, powered front seats with heating and massage functions, a heated steering wheel, tire pressure monitoring, Park Assist, and 9 airbags, among others. The highlight features, however, are the Level 2 Advanced Driver Assistance System with 21 safety functions and Dynamic Chassis Control with adjustable dampers, which is a first for an SUV in India.

On the powertrain front, purchasers receive the classic 2.0-litre TSI turbo-petrol engine mated with a 7-speed DSG (dual-clutch automatic) gearbox with 4Motion all-wheel drive standard. The engine has a maximum output of 201 horsepower and 320 Nm. VW claims that the unit achieves 12.58 km/l.

At its price category, the VW Tiguan competes with more traditional German automakers’ entry-luxury SUVs, like the Audi Q3, BMW X1, and Mercedes-Benz GLA. It will also have competition from the new Skoda Kodiaq, which will be launched later this week.
