Today, we’ve put together a list of India’s worst highways, which are a driver’s nightmare. If anything, this list should persuade you to stay away from these dangerous roads on your next road trip.

1. Rohtang Pass – Himachal Pradesh

The Rohtang Pass connects the Kullu Valley to Lahaul and Spiti Valley and is one of Himachal Pradesh’s busiest passes. It is rendered perilous by unexpected snowstorms and blizzards, despite the fact that it is not extremely high. The Atal Tunnel, completed recently beneath the Rohtang Pass, is the world’s longest single-tube tunnel over 3,048 metres.

2. Nathu La Pass – Sikkim

During the peak winter months, the Nathu La Pass is closed, and for good cause. It’s a dangerous path to traverse because of the heavy snow on the roads and the resulting ice sheets. It is located near the Indo-China border and serves as an alternate route to the Mount Kailash and Lake Manasarovar pilgrimages. However, if you can get over the pass’s frightening aspect, the breathtaking scenery will take your breath away.

3. Khardung La Pass – Ladakh

The elevation of this pass is wrongly listed as 5,602 metres, whereas it is really 5,359 metres. That doesn’t change the fact that it’s one of the world’s highest motorable passes. It is used to transport supplies to the Siachen Glacier and was built and maintained by Border Roads Organisation. It is prone to washouts, landslides, and road accidents because it is largely made up of tiny one-lane parts.

4. Kishtwar Kailash Highway – Jammu and Kashmir

Another of India’s most dangerous highways, this one is a driver’s nightmare. It’s located halfway between Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh, and it’s riddled with hairpin twists and treacherous driving conditions. Drivers who have made mistakes on this route have perished after falling 600 metres.

5. Chang La Pass

On one side, you’ll pass through sheer rock walls, while on the other, you’ll pass through a steep cliff. As you travel higher, the air thins out, and you may have headaches or nausea, so bring altitude sickness medicine to avoid health concerns. When you reach the summit of the Chang La pass, you’ll be greeted by a panoramic view of snowcapped mountains.

6. NH 22 – Himachal Pradesh

National Highway 22 is one of the world’s most perilous routes, having been carved out of enormous boulders. Although the route begins in Ambala and travels through Haryana, the segment surrounding the Taranda Dhank cliff in Kinnaur is the most perilous. Because of its steep blind bends and overhanging rocks, it has taken numerous life.

7. Zoji La Pass

It is the lifeblood that connects Ladakh’s inhabitants to the rest of the globe. Only a small line may be seen if you look at the sheer mountain sides for a road. That is the ‘path’. It’s nothing more than a one-lane disintegrating dirt route that borders some of the world’s tallest mountains, with any who arrive unprepared facing certain death.
