On Sunday, a car hit a Secret Service van linked to Joe Biden’s convoy, stunning the US president as he left his campaign headquarters in Delaware.
Following a loud noise produced by a sedan colliding with an SUV in a nearby junction about 130 feet (40 meters) from Biden, security workers hustled the president into a waiting vehicle and drove him away from the downtown Wilmington building.
“Both the president and first lady are fine,” a White House official who witnessed the incident told an AFP reporter.
Pool reporters had gathered on the sidewalk outside the campaign headquarters, where President Barack Obama and First Lady Jill Biden had dinner with staff, and had just finished shouting questions at Biden from a distance when they heard the crash and saw him with a confused expression on his face.
Agents swarmed the silver sedan with Delaware license plates and drew firearms on the driver, who held up his hands.
Staff swiftly gathered reporters to join the motorcade as it left the rain-soaked site.
“They’re evacuating; you guys gotta go,” a staffer said as security guards surrounded the area.
