The Maharashtra Motor Vehicle Transport Department intends to implement Artificial Intelligence (AI)-based driving tests in order to scientifically evaluate applicants’ safe driving skills, promote proper driver training, increase traffic rule awareness, and reduce waiting times for driving license issuance.
The transportation department will install Automated Driving Test Tracks at 17 different cities across the state. Mumbai Central, Badnera (Amravati), Buldhana, Nagpur City, Nagpur Rural, Nagpur East, Nanded, Ahmednagar, Alandi-Pune, Aurangabad, Hadapsar-Pune, Jalgaon, Saswad-Pune, Kolhapur, Nandivali Thane, Panvel, and Pen are just a few examples.
According to a senior official, seven of the twenty-four test evaluation elements that will be evaluated before awarding driving licenses would be computerized. The tracks will be designed to test three vehicle classes: two-wheelers, light commercial vehicles (LMVs), and heavy commercial vehicles (MHCVs), and will feature a figure-of-eight track, H-tracks, traffic signal tests, zebra crossing tests, zig-zag turns, gradient tests, and serpentine tracks.
The tracks will be outfitted with AI software to ensure no human interaction is required. The system will include facial recognition for applicant identification. It will also be able to replicate real-life scenarios and generate driving test results in real-time for each type of circuit.
