Bharat New Automotive Assessment Program Details
The recently announced Bharat New Automotive Assessment Program (Bharat NCAP) is an initiative by the Indian government to raise automotive safety standards in the M1 category of cars weighing up to 3,500 kg. This category contains passenger cars with a maximum seating capacity of eight plus the driver. The Central Institute of Road Transport (CIRT) will supervise the initiative, which will begin crash-testing automobiles on October 1, 2023. Bharat NCAP will assess automobile model base versions in three essential areas: adult occupant protection, child occupant protection, and safety assist technologies.
About Crash Test
According to the program, evaluations will include rigorous crash testing, such as frontal impact, side impact, and pole side impact trials, all of which will be performed at certain speeds: 64 km/h for frontal impact, 50 km/h for side impact, and 29 km/h for pole side impact. Vehicles will be evaluated and given one to five-star ratings based on their overall safety performance. Bharat NCAP is projected to greatly improve automobile safety in India by encouraging manufacturers to improve safety.
Car makers and importers must apply to the approved agency for testing using FORM 70-A. Ratings will be influenced by safety features such as the Electronic Stability Program (ESP), pedestrian protection, and seat belt reminders. While electric cars are not yet covered, Bharat NCAP’s future plans include their inclusion.
