The automaker will supply the Swedish boat builder with batteries and charging systems.
Polestar has made steady progress since separating from Volvo in 2017. That progression now includes getting off the ground and into the water. Polestar does not build boats. However, it will provide batteries and charging equipment to a company that does.
Candela is the name of the company, and the boats are not typical. For starters, they’re electric-powered, hence the deal with Polestar for batteries. Candela boats are also hydrofoils, with small underwater wings that lift the hull above the surface. An electric motor installed on the rear hydrofoil provides thrust. This design significantly reduces drag, with Polestar claiming that Candela hydrofoils use up to 80% less energy at higher speeds than traditional boats.
Polestar will supply Candela for several years, and both companies are based in Sweden, according to the terms of the agreement. Polestar has certainly made a splash in the electric world this year, unveiling multiple models, the most recent of which is a small convertible called the Polestar 6. Meanwhile, the Polestar 3 SUV will be released in October, and the Polestar 4 coupe-SUV will be released in 2023. That leaves the Polestar 5, an electric sedan set to debut in 2024.
Candela has four boats listed on its website at the moment. The Candela C-8 is featured in the photo gallery above. The P-8 Voyager, which has an enclosed cabin, is a similar design. The P-9 Shuttle is fully enclosed and billed as a water taxi. The P-12 Shuttle is an even larger transport, and they all feature hydrofoil technology.
“I am fascinated by the way Candela’s boats glide elegantly and efficiently through, or better, over, the water – amazing proof of the great aesthetics and experiences that modern, sustainable technology can create,” Polestar CEO Thomas Ingenlath said. “It’s fantastic that Polestar will be involved in future projects with Candela by supplying an essential component for their innovative propulsion systems. As a Candela battery supplier, we can help accelerate the transition to cleaner oceans and lakes, as well as electrify waterborne transportation.”
