Toyota Is The Biggest Car Maker Again

Toyota already has cause for celebration even if it hasn’t released its whole 2024 sales figures. It sold 9,857,938 cars worldwide as of November. To be clear, the figure also includes units sold by its subsidiaries, Hino, Daihatsu, and Lexus. The Volkswagen Group revealed its full sales numbers for the previous 12 months this week, showing a 2.3% decline in shipments to 9,239,500 cars and trucks.

Toyota already leads the VW Group by a substantial margin of 618,438 vehicles, even before accounting for its December sales, which have not yet been finalised. The Japanese behemoth is the largest carmaker in the world for the fifth consecutive year. This is in spite of a 3.6% drop in revenues from January to November as compared to 2023.

Despite having many more sub-brands under its large corporate umbrella, the VW Group was unable to catch up once more. Even while the German automaker has a wider selection of EVs and plug-in hybrids, it wasn’t enough to unseat Toyota.

The Hyundai Motor Group, which consists of the primary brand Hyundai, Kia, and Genesis, is probably going to take last place on the podium with 7.23 million sales in 2024—1% fewer than the previous year.
