Toyota Kirloskar Motor has finally unveiled its upcoming mid-size SUV – the Urban Cruiser Hyryder. Online and offline bookings for the model have been commenced at a token sum of Rs 25,000. It’s market launch, however, will take place in August or September, 2022. In the mid-size SUV space, the new Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder will take on the Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, Skoda Kushaq and Volkswagen Taigun. Maruti Suzuki’s upcoming Vitara SUV will also challenge the new Toyota SUV.
Interestingly, the Hyryder will share its platform, design elements, features and engine with the Maruti Vitara. Both models have been co-developed by Suzuki and Toyota under their joint venture.
The front fascia looks quite aggressive with large full LED headlamps and a crystal acrylic grille with piano black finish and a chrome separator running from one corner to its other. The double layers of LED DRLs are merging on the grille’s black finish. The front bumper has a tall air dam surrounded by LED headlights. The ‘Hybrid’ badge just below the wing mirror reveal its powertrain option.
The Toyota Hyryder SUV carries 17-inch alloy wheels, blackened A-pillars and a floating roof. At the back, the model features C-shaped taillamps extending on to the upright tailgate with dual C-shaped LED parking lamps. There is a pronounced chrome strip placed at the centre featuring Toyota’s logo merging with the taillamps.
Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder Interior Features
Inside, the dashboard of the new Toyota SUV appears similar to the Maruti Baleno and the upcoming Brezza. It has soft-touch leather finish with subtle use of chrome. The SUV’s 9-inch touchscreen infotainment system and steering wheel have also been sourced from the Maruti Baleno hatchback.
The SUV comes with the dual-tone seats, connected car tech, a panoramic sunroof, ambient lighting, front ventilated seats, wireless charger, a 360 degree camera and a multi-info display that shows fuel consumption data and details of the strong hybrid system’s rear time status, etc. The higher trims will be offered with features such as Head-Up-Display (HUD), leather seats, sunroof, cruise control, 6 airbags, ABS with EBD, hill decent control and vehicle stability control.
Hybrid Powertrain
The new Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder SUV will be made available with a Maruti-sourced 1.5L K15C petrol engine with mild (for lower variants) and strong hybrid system (for higher variants). Its mild version will be good for 103PS and 137Nm, while the strong hybrid setup will deliver 116PS. Both manual and automatic gearboxes will be on offer.
The strong hybrid model will be available with an e-CVT gearbox. The SUV is claimed to deliver the best fuel efficiency in the segment. The Toyota Hyryder will be the first vehicle in its category to come with AWD (all-wheel-drive) system. It will also be available with the FWD (front-wheel-drive) system.
