Building a car like the Bugatti Chiron Super Sport 300+ that can reach 304 mph (489 km/h) is an incredible achievement, but even most hardcore car guys with only a passing interest in aircraft will admit it’s less incredible than an airplane’s ability to transport a couple hundred people across thousands of miles of ocean with nothing but air between the two.
We have a feeling that what these visitors to the Greek island of Skiathos are going through is nothing compared to watching a powerful production car explode out of the blocks on a drag strip or storm past you on a fly-by.
The runway at Skiathos is so close to the Aegean Sea that planes are forced to almost skim the road between the airfield and Xanemos Beach on their descent. Generally, we are kept well away from where aircraft land and take off. Because of this, the small section of publicly accessible pavement at the northern end of the runway is a haven for aviation enthusiasts and thrill-seekers who, after consuming too much beer and sun, enjoy the thought of being buzzed by an aeroplane weighing 150,000 lbs (68,000 kg) as it passes inches above their heads.
Several camera angles of the same Wizzair Airbus A321 landing are shown in this video from the YouTube channel GreatFlyer, and some of them give the impression that the plane is coming in at such a shallow angle that it would completely rip off the roof of any full-size SUV foolish enough to park on the road. Although the plane is still several metres above the ground, the noise, air disturbance, and the brief eclipse of the sun must make it both thrilling and terrifying at the same time.
Do you think you’d be able to stand dead still and look the pilot in the eye with this hulk barrelling towards you?
