McLaren has something special in store for us at this year’s Monterey Car Week. The Solus, inspired by open-wheel race cars, is unveiled by the brand. The company is only producing 25 of them, and each one has a buyer. The deliveries will begin in 2023.
The Solus is powered by a Judd-sourced 5.2-liter naturally aspirated V10 engine with 829 horsepower (619 kilowatts) and 479 pound-feet of torque (650 Newton-meters). It has a top speed of 10,000 rpm and is a structural component of the chassis. McLaren expects the vehicle to reach 62 mph in 2.5 seconds and have a top speed of more than 200 mph (320 kph).
The model has a seven-speed sequential transmission and a casing made of aluminium and magnesium panels. The transmission is connected to the rear suspension.

The Solus weighs less than 2,205 pounds (1,000 kilogrammes), but its body can generate up to 2,646 pounds (1,200 kilogrammes) of downforce. Aerodynamic pods surround the wheels to make this possible. Furthermore, the front splitter directs air to ground-effect tunnels beneath the body. The radiators for the engine are located in the sidepods that are part of the rear fenders.
The suspension is made up of two wishbones at each end. The front bodywork reveals the pushrod-operated dampers, and the rear has pullrods.
The Solus has a single seat and a sliding canopy that allows the driver to enter the vehicle. Because McLaren works with the customer to mould the seat and its fixed location to the specific person, each one is unique. The steering wheel, like an open-wheel racing car, includes the necessary controls and instrument displays. The titanium roll hoop and halo protection structure are 3D-printed.

The 25 buyers will receive a full racing experience, including a driver-development coaching programme, an FIA-homologated racing suit, helmet, and bespoke HANS device.
The Solus is currently being tested on the racetrack. Buyers have access to prototype drive sessions where they can provide feedback on the vehicle’s evolution. When the process is finished, these people will have access to special track events. A flight case will also include tools, jacks, stands, radio sets, and a coolant pre-heater, allowing them to transport the machine to other events.
