Mitsubishi L200 Spied Tow Testing in US

A Mitsubishi L200 prototype was spotted testing in Europe a few weeks ago by our spy photographers. The midsize pickup truck, also known as the Triton or Strada in other parts of the world, is in desperate need of an update. According to reports, the next-generation model will be released in 2023.

In keeping with this, a pair of L200 prototypes were spotted again, this time on US soil, thanks to YouTube’s TFLnow. To conceal their identities, the two midsize trucks wore heavy concealment. A quick look at the spy shots below and the trucks above confirms that they are L200 prototypes.

The prototypes are both right-hand drive, which is something you’ll notice. They were also wearing Michigan manufacturer’s plates, raising the question of why they were in the US in the first place. One of the prototypes was being tested for towing.

The L200 prototypes caught in transit wore a rugged guise, as seen on the fender flares, roof rails, and taller wheels, similar to what we’ve seen in previous sightings. The vertically stacked headlights, as well as the massive meshed grille and running boards beneath the doors, were also visible.

At this point, we only know that the next-generation Mitsubishi Triton/Strada is being developed in collaboration with Nissan. As a result, the next-generation Navara will be based on the same platform, albeit with a different body. The Nissan truck will arrive after the Mitsubishi truck.

TFLnow speculates that the prototypes were spotted in the United States, specifically in Michigan, because Ram is reintroducing the Dakota nameplate. We’re not holding our breath for that one, but previous reports indicate Stellantis is enthusiastic about the idea.

The upcoming major redesign of the L200 line is expected to take place in 2023, though an exact date has yet to be announced.
