Lucid only designed the tri-motor 1,200-horsepower Air Sapphire to be faster than a Tesla Model S Plaid, which it is. As shown in this Hagerty video, which also includes the fastest gas-burning vehicle ever produced, the Bugatti Chiron Pur Sport, the Lucid sedan easily outperforms the Tesla because it has more power available.
The Bugatti has the most raw power—more than 1,500 horsepower—and would undoubtedly prevail in a longer race where top speed was also crucial. The three cars were only tested over a quarter-mile in this case, and on such a short distance, the Lucid Air Sapphire was clearly the victor.
By the end of the run the Lucid was traveling at 156 mph (251 km/h), while the Tesla reached 152 mph (244.6 km/h). The Bugatti was clearly already quicker by the time they crossed the line, traveling at 156 mph.
It was able to complete the race in 9.1 seconds, two tenths faster than the Tesla and Bugatti, which both finished in 9.3 seconds and effectively tied for second place. It’s interesting to note that the Lucid and Tesla both reach 60 mph (96 km/h) from a complete stop in about 2.1 seconds, with the former having a 0.03-second advantage.
The two EVs start the race side by side, and the Lucid doesn’t begin to establish a lead until the cars have gained some momentum, as can be seen in the video. Even though the Bugatti launches extremely aggressively, it cannot match the other two cars’ ability to put their power down due to their superior ability to control traction. Both are still significantly faster in sprints than the Bugatti.
The Lucid Air Sapphire outperformed the two cars positioned next to it, as was expected, but they also chose to compare the 210-horsepower Ducati Panigale V4 SP2. Even though the motorcycle had reached a higher speed of 157 mph (252.6 km/h) by the end of the race, it was still the Lucid that prevailed. In a longer race, the motorcycle might have caught up to and passed the Air.
