Japanese automakers are revealing information about their performance from the previous fiscal year, which concluded on March 31, at this time of year. Typically, firms make significant announcements, such as Mazda’s confirmation of a next-generation CX-5 hybrid. Subaru also has some crucial news to share: production of the new Forester will begin in the United States.
The sixth-generation vehicle will be built in Indiana, at the Lafayette facility. The Legacy sedan will no longer be produced after the 2025 model year, therefore production capacity will not be an issue. Subaru also plans to develop a hybrid version of the Forester at the same facility beginning in 2026. The Forester will be made domestically at the plant in Ōta, Gunma Prefecture in Japan.

The electrified variant will use Toyota’s hybrid technology, but we’re tuned in it’ll be a “Subaru distinctive HEV [hybrid-electric vehicle] featuring the horizontally opposed engine.” This hybrid Suburban won’t be the first to use Toyota technology; in 2019, the Crosstrek plug-in hybrid obtained components from the Prius Prime.
Subaru says that the Crosstrek will also use this “next-generation hybrid” at roughly the same time, which would be in 2026. The two facilities located in the United States and Japan are already producing the smaller crossover.

Subaru also intends to introduce three electric SUVs with Toyota’s advice, as revealed by our sister site InsideEVs. The EV trio will join the Solterra, which is paired with the bZ4X, as disclosed in the investment filing. Toyota will construct one of the new models in the United States. Subaru plans to produce another at its Yajima facility in Japan.
By the end of 2026, all three electric SUVs will be available for sale. Later, by 2028, these will be joined by more electric vehicles that Subaru built locally.
