Ford Mondeo Production For Europe Ends After Nearly 30 Years

Goodbye, farewell and amen.

The writing had been on the wall since Ford announced intentions to stop producing the Mondeo in March 2021. On April 4, the final automobile from the Valencia facility rolled off the production line, putting the final nail in the midsize car’s coffin. A product engineer posted an image of the midsize car’s final incarnation on LinkedIn, a grey waggon with a banner proclaiming it’s the last of its kind.

The codename “CD391” was shared with the now-defunct Fusion as Ford developed the car as the company’s first truly worldwide model. Its North American equivalent died over two years ago, but despite the fact that both cars are no longer in production, the model has spawned a new generation in China.

Indeed, the Mondeo Mk5 was unveiled at the beginning of the year in the world’s most populous country where it will be produced. Since its premiere, the Blue Oval has confirmed there are no plans to sell the revamped model elsewhere. The same thing can be said about the similarly styled Evos, a wagonized SUV we wouldn’t mind seeing outside of China. As for the Mondeo, it’s dead in Europe because people generally prefer something else. Ford didn’t specifically mention SUVs, only saying the model is now gone due to “changing customer preference.” A company spokesperson contacted by Autocar went on to say the Dearborn marque is “evolving our passenger vehicle range in Europe to meet changing customer needs as we move to an all-electric future.”

To some extent, the Mondeo is a victim of the SUV craze. For the same reason, the Opel Insignia will reportedly switch from the traditional sedan and wagon formula to a high-riding offering. Citroën has already gone down this road with the peculiar C5 X while Volkswagen has ended production of the Passat Sedan.

Wolfsburg is cooking up a new generation of its midsize model, but some say it will be a wagon-only affair. Should you still want a midsize car from a mainstream automaker, Skoda has confirmed the new Superb will once again come in both sedan/liftback and wagon flavors. There’s also the gorgeous Peugeot 508 available in Europe where Toyota sells the Camry.

As a final note, Ford will also wave goodbye to the EcoSport in Europe as production of the aging subcompact crossover in Romania is going to end later in 2022.
