Ford’s F-150 Lightning Electric Truck Just Got Even Faster

It’s official now. Ford confirmed today on Twitter that the F-150 Lightning can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph (96 km/h) in less than four seconds. The exact time was not disclosed by the automaker, but a sub-four-second time puts it on par with a slew of incredible sports cars and other performance vehicles. Previously, Ford estimated the truck’s 0-60 time to be around 4.5 seconds.

That much performance in a truck like the F-150 is fantastic, but it is only possible with the model’s extended-range battery. It is available as an option in the XLT and Lariat trims, with prices starting at just over $80,000. The battery is included with the Platinum trim.

When production of the F-150 Lightning began in April, Ford revealed that the truck would have more horsepower than was initially advertised. The extended-range battery’s rating increased from 563 horsepower (419 kilowatts) to 580 hp (432 kW). The standard-range battery’s power increased from 426 hp (317 KW) to 452 hp (337 kW). The torque rating has remained constant at 775 pound-feet (1,050 Newton-meters).

All of that performance is nice, but the pickup is still dealing with supply chain issues that are negatively impacting its price. The automaker had to raise the truck’s base price by $7,100 earlier this month. That’s a significant leap. The new price, however, had no effect on the truck’s status as the most affordable electric pickup on the market, as it continued to undercut the Rivian R1T and GMC Hummer EV. The entry-level Chevrolet Silverado EV, which will go on sale sometime next year, could pose a threat.

EVs of all shapes and sizes continue to demonstrate the performance capabilities of the technology. Even if it is expensive, a sub-four-second pickup truck is an impressive feat. The F-150 Lightning is still in its first year of production, but sales are strong. Ford hopes to differentiate itself from other automakers by creating compelling products that elicit excitement, as consumers appear to be eager to own the latest technology. They are less concerned with efficiency.
